SuaraPemerintak.ID –  The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Australia agreed to follow up on joint action to protect marine and fishery resources from the threat of IUU fishing in the border area of the Timor Sea and Arafura.

This action was agreed upon at the 22nd Indonesia-Australia Fisheries Surveillance Forum (IASFS) Annual Meeting which was held in Darwin, Australia, Friday (30/9/22).

“Indonesia and Australia are committed to continuing to create a safe and peaceful maritime area from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities,” said the Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervision, Rear Admiral TNI Dr. Adin Nurawaluddin, M.Han in his speech.

He explained, that Indonesia and Australia had formed a Working Group or Working Group that was previously agreed upon to carry out joint actions in supporting efforts to eradicate IUU Fishing, including the Working Group on Public Information Campaign, Surveillance and Law Enforcement, and Alternative Livelihood.

Furthermore, he said, of the three Working Groups, two of them had been successfully implemented, namely the Public Information Campaign through the Teaching PSDKP program through educational and outreach activities regarding sustainable fishing in Rote and Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province and Surveillance and Law Enforcement through coordinated patrols in the border areas of the Timor Sea and Arafura, exchange of surveillance data and information and capacity building of human resources.

“It is hoped that this joint action will not only be able to eradicate IUU Fishing, but also be able to contribute positively and actively to global efforts in the framework of the sustainable utilization of marine and fisheries resources, including food security in the global region,” he said.

He acknowledged that the biggest challenge faced in implementing this Working Group was creating alternative livelihoods for fishermen who carry out IUU Fishing activities. This is due to the need for support from various parties to be able to implement these actions. Thus, this year Indonesia and Australia agreed to implement the Public Information Campaign and Surveillance and Law Enforcement activity plans, as well as encourage relevant institutions in the two countries to continue to formulate technical steps through the Alternative Livelihood Working Group.
